A good friend of mine gave me the following sequence which explains how equanimity is reached. It all starts with discipline and flows from there, think of arrows leading from one stage to the next:
Discipline (for the sake of)
Restraint (for the sake of)
Freedom of Remorse (for the sake of)
Joy (for the sake of)
Rapture ( for the sake of)
Tranquility (for the sake of)
Pleasure (for the sake of)
Concentration (for the sake of)
Knowledge (for the sake of)
Vision of things as they come to be (for the sake of)
Disenchantment (for the sake of)
Dispassion, focus on duty and letting go (for the sake of)
Release (for the sake of)
Equanimity (total unbinding through non clinging)
